More Good True Stuff

Today, I brought my Cox Communications bill to work. I want to call them and make some changes to our service. We pay them a ton of money and it really bothers me.

Anyway, I’m looking at the bill on my desk and there’s a bold “What’s New From Cox” blurb. So… what is new from Cox you ask?
Well, here’s what it says verbatim:

MORE VALUE, MORE CHOICE… MORE CHANNELS! On December 28, 2005, Cox Digital Cable will add two new channels to the lineup. PBS KIDS SPROUT (Ch. 351) is a fresh new destination devoted to preschool children and their parents and caregivers. LOGO (Ch. 341) offers innovative originals, movies, documentaries and specials that reflect the diversity of the gay experience and appeal to a broad range of gay and non-gay viewers.

Maybe it’s just me but announcing a preschool channel right next to a gay channel is just asking for our bible reading citizens to call up and complain.

I just love this stuff.

New Years Resolutions

Everybody’s doing it so I will too. Some of my ongoing resolutions are listed at 43things.com.

Here’s my current list and some detailed goals that go with my resolutions.

  1. Sort out my finances
    • Cut my debt in half
    • Pay off my credit card
    • Use all of my consulting income to pay off debts
    • Make and follow a budget
    • Keep track of my finances in Quicken and keep them up to date
    • Pay for vacations without using credit card
    • Pay for gifts without using credit card
    • Have adequate savings
    • Figure out how much I need to save to retire and start saving it
  2. Take care of my body
    • Get my weight down to at least 180
    • Be able to complete long club rides on Saturday and Sunday and keep up with the group
    • Be able to complete a spin class and really go as hard as I can
    • Be able to climb out of the saddle all the way up Torrey Pines
    • Stretch more
    • Eat better. Joining BeWise Ranch’s Community Supported Agriculture program helps with this one.
  3. Get my job skills on
    • Learn Perl
    • Learn how to use PostgreSQL functions
    • Be a better project manager
    • Get my personal MBA
  4. Be productive
    • Turn off the television
    • Stick to my plans
    • Work on work days, play on play days
    • Don’t over commit
  5. Put family first
    • Be a better husband than the day before
    • Be closer to my sister
    • See my mother and extended family more frequently
  6. Give back
    • Clean up Morley Field
    • Make San Diegans pay for trash collection
    • Commute to work by bike
    • Volunteer at the animal shelter

Time to get to stop blogging and get to work on some of these.

Is my cron job working now?

I’ve sent several dozen of these test emails to the email address I set up for moblogging. I feel like the psuedo hipster of Verizon Wireless fame.

Finally, after nearly a week of wanking with it and changing the settings I can finally send an email to this address and have it show up on my blog. Next up is a test of a camera phone photo email then all I have to do is learn the special Postie codes then I’m ready to blog as I go through my day.

I ended up changing the way the recommend calling the get_mail.php script in the cron job from */5 * * * * /usr/bin/lynx –source http://www.economysizegeek.com/wp-content/plugins/postie/get_mail.php >/dev/null 2>&1
to
*/5 * * * * /path/to/php -q /path/to/wordpress/wp-content/plugins/postie/get_mail.php >/dev/null 2>&1

At the top of get_mail.php I added the following line which enables me to run the script from the command line. I’ve added it above the actual < ?php opening tag. #!/usr/local/bin/php -q

I hope this helps someone.
