I recently found mozy.com on lifehacker.com. Mozy.com is a free online backup system that offers a slick way to backup your computers to servers on the web. They pay for it by sending you ads. So far they’re still in beta but the product has worked well for me. I’ve only backed up and not restored (testing a restore should definitely be a part of any back up regimen) but I’ll probably try that in the near future.
Some of the things I like best about mozy are:
*Configurations include what to backup and when to back it up. The client application can also detect how whether my CPU is idle and start backing up then.
*The people creating it insist on releasing a bug free product.
*They will be offering more than the free 2 GB of space for a mere $1.00 per GB with a 4 GB minimum. Paying also prevents you from getting the emailed ads.
*You can back up more as many as three computers as long as you don’t go over your disk space quota.
What’s bad about it are:
*Only works on windows XP
*Installation is very simple but it takes a few tries before the initial backup works. This causes me concern. My concerns will be allayed once I do a restore from backup.
I urge others to try this service and report back. It’s a very good idea and much needed. I’d love for them to be a sucess so we have a good place for backups.
