San Francisco Update

Because Forest brought her fabulous little Inspiron 700m I’m able to blog a bit about our trip. First off, it’s been fabulous. San Francisco is a very nice city. I mean city in all senses of the word. It’s dense, culture rich and thriving. The people (the ones that aren’t homeless at least) all dress in a very hip, stylish way that you only get in dense urban centers. The rich architectural diversity and diverse art scene give you inspiration at every glance.

We’re staying at the Hotel Vitale which is very nice. Last night a car ran into the gas main and we were evacuated from the hotel. Normally this wouldn’t have been much of an issue except that we had spa treatment appointments (a gift from Forests mother for her birthday).

We rescheduled and went to North Beach to Pinnochios for an excellent meal. To our surprise the hotel has graciously comped our room for the night and is giving us a free meal.

I’m off to go eat my free meal now then we’re off to Suasalito for an all day art festival and walk about.

I have tons of pictures from the new camera phone so I’ll put those up as soon as I get home.

Off to San Francisco

Today, at 9:40, we leave sickly little San Diego for big city minded San Francisco. I’ve been off work since August 26th and it has been heavenly. As sick as our city government is here in San Diego, we do have an awful lot of fun things to do. Road cycling, mountain biking, long walks along the bay and dining in Little Italy have really raised the bar for our pending vacation. I’m sure San Francisco will live up to its reputation.

A few things to mention before I leave:
1) Bucky is really favoring his left ear. I’m not sure why this always seems to happen the day we’re supposed to leave. He got me up at 5 AM and has been digging at it for the past hour. I really love him but his timing definitely needs some work.
2) Susan got her Dell Inspiron 700m. It’s a very nice little laptop. I’m not sure why Dell couldn’t find a bit more room for an internal Bluetooth card. It seems to me that the type of people who want an ultra portable laptop are probably the type of people who would use Bluetooth.
3) I set up a Dell Inspiron 5100 for Larry. It’s a nice box and I’ll probably upgrade our 5 year old desktop box with the a 5100 before the end of the year.
4) I’m head of heels in love with my new Motorola E815. I’ve hacked the connectivity somewhat and now I can hook it up to my laptop and transfer my contacts. I need to get the bluetooth connection working to my laptop then I’ll hack the seem so I can use OBEX and DUN. Using the Motorola HS850 with the E815 is a dream come true. Being able to just speak a command into the phone and have it just work is delicious. I wish I would have made this purchase before I quit the job with the long drive every day. My productivity would have been much greater.
5) I don’t know if I’ve ever really updated a post from ages ago about bookmarks but I have to say that I really love Spurl. The Firefox plug-in makes keeping your bookmarks organized and universally available easy. It also hooks up to del.icio.us for the tagging and other human based filtering.

With all of that mostly geeky stuff said, I’d like to encourage any readers to make a donation to the ASPCA Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. Thousands of dogs (and cats) will be homeless from this mega-disaster. Your donation could help save the life of a few of them. Please give generously.
