I have absolutely no intention of working today. Yes, I’m at work but I’m caught up, there’s nothing for me to do and short of wasting my co-workers time, I have lots of time on my hands. Here are some interesting things I’ve done so far today:

  • Set up wake on LAN for my desktop box. Actually, Mattzog, our friendly desktop support dude set it up for me. Now I can feel good and green all weekend long because I turned my desktop box off at work. But, in the event I need to access stuff on the box, I can VPN into our network, double click an application on my laptop, type in my work desktop mac address then wake the sucker up. Very easy, very handy and just what the doctor ordered in the state known for its failed electrical utility deregulation
  • Set up Firefox as my default browser on my work computer I’ve had my laptop set up this way since I got it in May 2005. Now I’ve taken the bold step of doing so on my work computer. The issue that made me want to do this is that I like to read blogs in Outlook using Newsgator. But, when I clicked a link, it always opened up in Internet Explorer instead of a tab in Firefox. What I did was install the Single Window extension for Firefox, set Firefox as the default browser (start->control panel->Add or Remove Programs->Set Program Access and Defaults->Custom->Choose a default Web browser. Then I went into Firefox tools->options->Advanced->Tabbed Browsing->Open links from other applications in: a new tab in the most recent window. Not all of my applications open in Firefox but most do. I’m happier now and certain the world will become a better place because I’ve done this.

My Tomatoes

Update: A few weeks ago, after ten days of attempting to thwart the destruction of my tomatoes, I pulled them up. I regret it now. I was still getting lots of good tomatoes. I just needed to harvest them as the got even semi-ripe then leave them inside the house until we were ready to eat them.

Something is eating my precious heirloom tomatoes. I’m pissed. My wife is pissed.

Every year since we’ve had this house I’ve put basil and tomatoes into my little garden. I’ve had various issues with the tomatoes but this year takes the cake. More than half of my tomatoes are being eaten by something. I’m OK with a few getting eaten. I figure that’s the price I have to pay for organic farming.

What I’m not willing to do is spend time and energy and give all of my crop to some creature. So, with this in mind, I went to Home Depot Yesterday and got some bird netting. I spent nearly an hour putting the netting over the tomatoes as best I could. I pinned it down with rocks.

Today I got up and another large, nearly ripe brandywine tomato was half eaten. I guess I had a breach in my security perimeter and will have to work on this more tonight. I’ll put up some pictures as well.

Business Opportunity

In Guadalupe Valley, Baja California Norte, there are many wineries. Each year there is a harvest festival. I’ve only been once but it’s very fun.

There is no web site for this event known as Festival de Vendimia.

I’m going to register the domains and put up some information and some links to hotels and other attractions as well as ways to get down there, etc.
